This no-cost screening is brought to you by Walmart and Quest Diagnostics, and sponsored by Amgen Inc.

Frequently Asked Questions

Osteoporosis is a loss of bone density and weakened bone structure which can lead to an increased risk of fracture.

Bone is always changing and growing. There are cells in your body that remove old bone and other cells that rebuild bone. It is an ongoing natural process happening in your body. As you age, you lose more bone than you gain. This can develop into osteoporosis. When bones are affected by osteoporosis, the honeycomb spaces within the bone become much bigger, making the bones less dense, weaker, and more prone to breaking.

Osteoporosis screening is recommended for:

Reach out to your doctor to discuss your concerns and ask about getting screened.

A bone mineral density (BMD) test is used to screen for osteoporosis. Quest uses BeamMed technology (soundwaves) to assess bone mineral density. This assessment can help detect your risk for osteoporosis-related fractures, but it cannot diagnose osteoporosis. Your results will provide you with an indication of fracture risk (low, medium, or high) along with a detailed explanation of your screening. However, this is just one part of the screening process and further testing and evaluation may be needed. It’s important to talk to your healthcare provider to identify risk factors and determine the steps you need to take to manage your risk.

A bone mineral density (BMD) test is used to screen for osteoporosis. Patient Service Representatives at Quest use a BeamMed technology scanner (soundwaves) to conduct the BMD test. A BeamMed scan of your forearm/wrist area provides a reliable, accurate, noninvasive, and safe assessment of bone density for fracture risk. The screening should take approximately 8–10 minutes.

Please refer to the BeamMed technology scanner product documentation at www.beammed.com for complete information on its use and limitations. Quality and regulatory compliance information can be found here.

You do not have to do anything to prepare. Schedule an appointment and then bring your ID with you to your appointment at a Walmart-based Quest Patient Service Center. The bones in your wrist/forearm area are scanned, so you may want to wear clothing which enables easy access to your wrist/forearm area.

Screening results should be available within 24 hours from the time of screening.

If your results have not appeared in your MyQuest account 2-5 business days after screening, you can login to MyQuest, go to the Results tab and click Request Test Results. Fill out the required information and submit the form.

You can get your screening results through MyQuest, our secure online patient portal. Results are delivered directly to MyQuest on your smartphone, tablet, or desktop. You will receive an email notification when your results are ready.

You will be the only one with access to your information and test results, except for PWNHealth (the healthcare professionals who ordered your testing and can provide information about your results). Please see the PWNHealth privacy policy for further information.

Your results will not be shared with your doctor unless you decide to share your results directly. We strongly recommend that you share your test results with your doctor in order to make the best health decisions.

Your osteoporosis screening includes an opportunity to discuss your results with an independent licensed physician or other healthcare provider from PWNHealth during a telehealth consult. This consult gives you the opportunity to get answers to any questions you may have about your test results before speaking with your doctor. We strongly recommend that you share your test results with your doctor in order to make the best health decisions.

If you would like to speak with a member of the PWNHealth care coordination team or a PWNHealth physician to discuss your results, you can contact PWNHealth Monday–Friday 9:00 AM–5:30 PM EST at 1.888.631.4777.

PWNHealth is an independent healthcare provider network that provides oversight services to you in connection with the laboratory testing that you have requested. PWNHealth and its services are independent from the laboratory and company from whom you requested and registered for the test and their services.

If your test results are abnormal, PWNHealth’s Care Coordination Team may attempt to contact you to notify you of your results. You will also have an opportunity to schedule a telehealth consult with an independent licensed physician or other healthcare provider from PWNHealth, who can answer any questions you may have about your test results and help determine next steps.
